Courses

As a result of my material and construction background and interest, I got involved in construction education shortly after I finished my Masters. Following, a selection of courses at different universities are introduced shortly.

Master of Architecture, Tilburg, Fabrication Studio

The Fabrication Studio aims to center architectural design on making. Through processes of trial-and-error, and action and reflection, various materials and fabrication methods are studied. Next, based on new material insights, design concepts are introduced. Then, the feasibility of the design concepts is reviewed through material reflection, prototyping, and parametric modeling. Finally, a selection of projects is prepared for world-scale fabrication.

Brno University of Technology, Construction Studio

The construction studio is an integrated learning environment design that aims at conceptual understanding of construction in architectural design. Centered on scaffolds called ‘Spatial Design Taxonomy’, and ‘Serial Integration Strategy’, learners are introduced into architectural construction gradually, and effectively.

Willem de Kooning, Rotterdam, Spatial Design

The courses ‘Force&Fiction’ explore materials and construction through making and digital design. During four semesters, spatial design is studied using models, mock-ups, form-studies, CAD, CAM, AR, VR, projection mapping, and large-scale construction. Each technique introduced is studied in close collaboration with various so-called stations (i.e. specialized workshops).

KU Leuven, Brussels & Ghent, Interior Architecture

The course ‘BIA23 Materials’ explores materials, processes, and joints through in-class courses and workshop exercises. During one semester, materials are studied in the context of interior architecture through literature research, design exercises, and material and project analysis. At the end of the course, novel insights are used in the design and construction of seat furniture or installations.

The workshop ‘BIA33 Structures’ explores structures through building exercises. During three four hour sessions, horizontal and vertical structures are designed, constructed, and tested in various scales.

HKU, Utrecht, Spatial Design

During the course ‘Technical Knowledge Development’ materials, processes, and joints are explored through design and construction exercises. Over the course of four semesters, materials and structures are studied in the context of spatial- and urban design.

During the course ‘Professional Technology’ three types of structures are explored through design and construction exercises. Over the course of 12 lessons, vertical and horizontal structures are studied in the context of spatial- and urban design.
